OCZ is back in action with another barebones notebook—and this time, the system based on Intel's new Centrino 2 platform. Dubbed simply DIY 15" Gaming Notebook, OCZ's latest laptop delivers a 15.4", 1280x800 glossy display, an Intel PM45 Express chipset, and a Radeon HD 3650 graphics processor with 512MB of RAM (and HDMI video output).
Users are free to add an Intel Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Extreme processor of their choosing, a 2.5" mechanical hard drive or solid-state drive, and up to eight gigs worth of DDR2-800 SO-DIMMs. Judging by the full spec sheet (PDF), OCZ takes care of the notebook's Wi-Fi needs by bundling an Intel 5300 802.11n card, and it gives users a choice of either a DVD burner or a Blu-ray combo drive.
Don't go buy one of these expecting an ultra-portable gaming machine, though. OCZ says the 15" DIY notebook tips the scales at 6.8 lbs with the six-cell battery, and it mentions the enclosure's thickness ranges from 1.19" to 1.48". Official product photos don't look particularly flattering in that respect:
Of course, while OCZ doesn't quote a launch price tag, the company has aimed quite low with past offerings—its PM965- and GeForce 8600M GT-based 15.4" DIY notebook currently sells for $750 with free shipping at Newegg, and a mail-in rebate can take shave that down to $650. We wouldn't be surprised to see this new contender priced similarly (or maybe a little higher).
